  52.     Booter15.ZIP is a dual configuration booting manager allowing you to
  53. have both your full autoexec.bat and config.sys files on boot configuration
  54. one and allowing you to have a clean autoexec.bat and config.sys on config
  55. #2.  This is very useful, especially for those of you who don't like the
  56.  
  57.  
  58. idea of having a boot disk for Zone66 (which is EXCELLENT -- if you don't
  59. have it, GET IT!).  Now you can swap back and forth at will.

  193. I disagree.  It would be very nice for my kids if I could set up their
  194. games so they can run them from windows again.  They love the better
  195. sounds from the GUS, but aren't quite old enough for the DOS
  196. interface.  (Are any of us?)

  208. In a leading Dutch Magazine, PC Magazine (no, it is not affiliated with the
  209. US or UK PC Magazine), a test of the GUS was published this month. It also
  210. discussed other 'exotic' cards, like the Adlib Gold 1000, Opti.Sound and the
  211. Turtle Beach MultiSound.
  212.  
  213. They were impressed with the GUS's sound quality. Their conclusion was (not
  214. surprisingly) that the MultiSound has the best sound quality, but that it is
  215. too expensive. The GUS, so they said, is versatile and 'has everything for
  216. almost nothing'. So good value for money! Their only complaint was the not
  217. so very good software support, but they mentioned that Gravis is working on
  218. improvement of their drivers.

  241. I loaded the new disks on my system with the new 2.02 SBOS and am now
  242. trying to get the CD version of KQ5 to work. No matter what settings I
  243. use, all I get is a "Cannot initialize sound hardware" error message,
  244. the system locks up, and I have to reboot.

  261.     The new version of the GUS drivers in windows work great. But still I
  262. have a question on loading patches. I have downloaded a midi named " A Night
  263. On Bald Mountain ", I need to reset all the patches for that midi using Win-
  264. jammer (ver 2.24), it sounds OK in Winjammer. But when I tried to load this
  265. midi with "Media Player" or "MCS Stereo", I've found that not all the patches
  266. in that midi were loaded, only 8 of them were loaded and it sounds weird.
  267.     Each time I played this midi, I've to loaded manually using patch 
  268. manager or use winjammer. Could anyone help to solve this problem?

  272.         set active voices to 20
  273.         default IRQs, PORT, and CHANNEL

  293. I reviewed the note that Paul Cunnel sent you and found it to be accurate.
  294. The interface I built was the same with 3 exceptions:
  295.  
  296. 1. I used a 4n137 rather than a 4n138, which as Paul points out may be
  297.    marginal for current requirements, but I had one.
  298.  
  299. 2. I used a 4K7 resistor pullup on the opto rather than 270 ohms. 270
  300.    ohms seemed a bit low to me, considering the current transfer ratio
  301.    of the 4n137 and the LED current.
  302.  
  303. 3. I added a 0.1uF bypass capacitor near the opto, as recommended in the
  304.    data sheet.

  320. I have a large collection of .MOD files that sound GREAT on GUSMOD ver 2.11.
  321. I have not experienced any problems at all with it.  I would like to know, 
  322. though, what an MED mod is?  I cannot seem to play these files at all.  I heard 
  323. that an MED is an 8 track mod as opposed to 4 track ProTrakter .MOD songs.  Does 
  324. anyone know of an MED player for GUS or for any other sound card for PCs?

  338. I am having some problems, still.
  339.  
  340. I tried changing my DMA's/IRQ's with setgus. I eventually
  341. had a test fail - an IRQ conflict. Maybe this is really
  342. an IRQ problem. I don't know. Phat Tran suggested trying
  343. the same DMA channel for playback and record, although I
  344. don't know if this would have an impact on Windows.
  345.  
  346. Once I thought I had things worked out, I made a new MIDI
  347. file. It has bad notes in it! It'll honk out a note when
  348. there should be none, on some weird pitch. And timing is
  349. really off. It kind of stutters, even with Media player.
  350. I tried a "big" MIDI file, one that has a lot going on in
  351. it, and I got kicked out of Windows *twice*! It didn't
  352. display an error message, just booted me back to the C:
  353. prompt. I tried this with and without the MIDI card
  354. installed, so that's not the problem. One time it just
  355. completely locked up with the GUS bleating out a chord.
  356. I have also gotten EMM386 Exception Error 06, which is
  357. invalid opcode.
  358.  
  359. And of course SBOS still hangs when it loads.
  360.  
  361. I am going to call the Packard Bell hardware support line
  362. today and see what DMAs/IRQs the hardware might be using.
  363. The software support folks said I can use DMA 0, 1, 3, 5, 6,
  364. and 7. 2 is reserved for hard drives and 4 cascades for 0-3.
  365. IRQ's - who knows. When I use MSD, it looks like they're
  366. all assigned!
  367.  
  368. There are several messages in today's digest about people
  369. having problems with the Windows drivers. I'm really
  370. beginning to think there are bugs in the code.
  371.  
  372. Will the new PAT files work with the original Windows drivers
  373. that came on my 1.1 install disks? That's an option.
  374.  
  375. Oh - one more thing. I tried loading SBOS with -x3 and it
  376. said something like "NMI not on this machine" (some three
  377. letter N acronym I'd never heard of - it's written down
  378. at home, of course). Thought that was weird.

  419. I installed the new GUS software last night hoping that it would cure my
  420. Super Tetris Lockup problem.  The install went smoothly, I erased
  421. all files in the ultrasnd directory and removed any GUS related stuff from
  422. my autoexec.bat and config.sys files.  I removed the old Windows driver
  423. using the Driver applet before installing, but thats all I did for Windows.
  424.  
  425. All the demo's worked, patch manager worked, winjammer ok, but Super Tetris
  426. still locks up when two bombs hit two bonus point boxes that are side by
  427. side.  This is just one specific example that we observed last night. It
  428. also started locking up when clearing the last row of rubble before going
  429. to the next level.
  430.  
  431. Is anyone else out there playing this game?  Some feedback would be much
  432. appreciated.

  462. Go into your Control Panel Drivers icon, select the UltraSound
  463. MIDI/Synth and select HIGH FIDELTY for the patches.  Windows install
  464. defaults to 8bit mode and not 16bit mode.

  477. I have found patches 94 and 95 (two of the Pad(xx)) have 'clicks' in them.
  478.  This occurs both when in PatchManager and also when playing a midi file
  479. with WinJammer.  Under PatchManager, if I hold a note down then the click
  480. repeats, ie is cyclical.
  481.

  577. I am enclosing a MIDI file that kills Windows dead.
  578. I have some kind of DMA/IRQ problem, and I don't know if
  579. it's the new Windows drivers or my system.

  582. with a sequencer. I get about to where the flute comes in, than
  583. it kills Windows. Other MIDI files drop notes, add wrong
  584. notes, etc. in Windows.

  830. Here is a new problem report on SBOS 2.02 (the new one on GUS0017-0021).

  832. I have seldom had SERIOUS SBOS problems before.  I have whine occasionally 
  833. about out-of-pitch and out-of-phase problems, but I have never had *total
  834. death*.  I say this to let you know that I seem to have a fairly vanilla 
  835. configuration.  (386-40, Opti (but never any problems), 4Meg, EMM386, 
  836. Smartdrive, no stacker, etc etc).
  837.  
  838. Everything on the new disks worked wonderfully when I installed.  No hangs, no
  839. problems.  I took the defaults, which gave me DMA 7, BTW.  I guess it figured
  840. out that my chips worked ok.  Windows drivers work great. SBOS seems to load
  841. itself and unload with no problem.
  842.  
  843. UNTIL...I ran Kings Quest 5.  The game immediately gave me a dialog box saying
  844. "Could not initialize sound card".  When I told it to continue, I then got
  845. a message saying that EMM386 had gotten a fatal exception.  At this point I
  846. had to reboot.
  847.  
  848. I tried everything I could think of.  Did not load the initializing driver.
  849. Loaded SBOS low.  Did not load SBOS in AUTOEXEC.  Used switches.  Everything I 
  850. could think of.  No go.
  851.  
  852. I finally fell back to 1.37B (you will remember that 1.4b2 was out of tune)
  853. and all was well again.  So it is clearly SBOS itself, not the setup.
  854.  
  855. Personally, I don't care THAT much.  I can run KQ5 on my D110, and besides, I
  856. don't play it much anyway.  It is mainly my daughter's, and she has lots of 
  857. homework!  But I'm concerned that if this SBOS gets shipped to the whole world 
  858. with SB Compatibility trumpeted, and if it fails on a lot of games, that the 
  859. GUS will begin to get a seriously bad reputation in the world at large.

  875. comments along the lines of 'the GUS is a great MOD player, but it's garbage
  876. for anything else' and 'I hooked the card along with my MIDI setup and it was
  877. terribly noisy' You really would have to be here, but I'm happy to make

  1018. It *is* disappointing to have no volume control on the GUS, as the
  1019. Sound Blaster has.  On the other hand, the volume control on the
  1020. SB is behind the computer and not so easy to reach.

  1022. I solved the problem by connecting LINE OUT to an old stereo
  1023. receiver and also connecting a decent pair of speakers to it instead
  1024. of the Walkman-type speakers.  Wow! That produces great sound.

  1027. Nobody Beats the Wiz a possible solution:  it's a volume control with
  1028. Walkman-type connectors (M/F) on it.  It's a wire with a thumwheel in

  1030. to recall the price being something like $10-15 (USA), and I think
  1031. it was made by Recotron.

  1055. clicks each click starts to generate a beep on the PC
  1056. speaker.
